Job Description
Job Overview
The Director of Marketing & Communications is responsible for developing and implementing KR’s annual, organization-wide marketing strategy, telling the Kansas REALTORS® story clearly and compellingly to members, local associations, brokers, policymakers, industry partners, media, and the public. The position develops and executes integrated, measurable campaigns that demonstrate member value, advance KR’s strategic priorities, increase engagement, and support program participation and revenue opportunities. This hands-on strategist combines strong writing and visual storytelling with video production and post-production expertise, monitors performance against established metrics, and continuously adjusts tactics to improve results.
Responsibilities
*Strategic Marketing & Campaign Leadership (40%)*
· Own the development, implementation, and annual refresh of a comprehensive, organization-wide marketing strategy aligned with KR’s strategic plan, including audience-specific objectives, core narratives, campaign priorities, channel plans, budgets, timelines, and measurable targets.
· Translate KR’s mission, advocacy, services, outcomes, and member value into a cohesive, compelling story tailored for distinct audiences—including members, local associations, brokers, volunteer leaders, policymakers, partners, media, and the public—and deploy it consistently across channels.
· Design and execute integrated, multichannel campaigns from audience research and message development through production, distribution, performance analysis, and optimization; take ownership of results.
· Establish marketing priorities across KR programs and coordinate with department leaders to convert organizational objectives into actionable, results-oriented marketing plans.
· Guide brand positioning, message consistency, and marketing priorities; advise the CEO and staff leaders on narrative opportunities, audience needs, emerging issues, and effective communications tactics.
· Identify, select, brief, and coordinate external creative and digital service providers, including videographers, photographers, graphic designers, web designers, and other marketing contractors. Define project scope, deliverables, timelines, and quality standards; manage production and reviews; and evaluate vendor performance and results against approved budgets and marketing objectives.
*Member Engagement, Program & Partnership Marketing (25%)*
· Develop and execute measurable campaigns that increase awareness, benefit utilization, registrations, renewals-related engagement, and perceived value among KR members and targeted audiences.
· Collaborate with education, events, membership, volunteers, governmental affairs, and leadership to set specific marketing goals and conversion targets for conferences, education, advocacy initiatives, leadership opportunities, and other strategic priorities.
· Coordinate communications supporting member onboarding, retention, feedback, and engagement initiatives, with operational ownership of membership records and service delivery retained by the appropriate departments.
· Produce communications tools and resources for local associations, brokers, and volunteer leaders to extend KR’s reach and reinforce consistent messaging.
· Develop and deploy audience-specific messaging and engagement strategies through KR’s internal member and volunteer communities; curate relevant content, encourage meaningful participation, coordinate with community owners, and use engagement metrics to refine tactics and advance association objectives.
· Plan, execute, and measure marketing deliverables for sponsors, affinity partners, and new revenue initiatives, in coordination with the staff responsible for agreements, partner relationships, and revenue.
*Communications & Digital Channel Management (15%)*
· Serve as the primary content and experience owner for kansasrealtor.com, enhancing and maintaining the website’s ongoing functionality, usefulness, accuracy, and effectiveness in advancing KR’s marketing and member-service objectives; coordinate platform maintenance, technical integrations, and security issues with operations and contracted IT providers.
· Acquire, develop, organize, and regularly update website content; plan intuitive navigation, accessible layouts, effective page design, and clear calls to action for KR’s distinct audiences. Monitor website analytics and user behavior, test improvements, and refine content and user experience to increase engagement and conversions.
· Independently plan, script, film, edit, caption, process, and publish professional-quality short- and long-form video content—including interviews, leadership messages, program promotions, event coverage, and social media videos—while directing additional outside production resources when warranted.
· Manage campaign segmentation, marketing automation, editorial calendars, content templates, and distribution workflows in KR’s association management and communications platforms, in coordination with membership and operations staff.
· Serve as the primary administrator for all official KR social media accounts, overseeing account access, permissions, settings, security, publishing, and moderation. Monitor accounts regularly; acquire, develop, verify, organize, and maintain timely, relevant content and information for each audience and platform. Maintain an integrated editorial calendar, respond or appropriately route inquiries, and track performance to refine content and engagement tactics.
· Plan, organize, create, edit, and publish the weekly KR Buzz e-newsletter and monthly Broker e-newsletter, including editorial calendars, content acquisition and coordination, audience-specific messaging, layout, distribution, and review of engagement metrics to improve effectiveness.
· Develop, write, distribute, and coordinate timely press releases, media statements, and other relevant information for news media, industry partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders; maintain appropriate media relationships and coordinate messaging and approvals with KR leadership.
*Marketing Analytics, Optimization & Accountability (15%)*
· Establish baseline measures, annual marketing goals, campaign KPIs, reporting dashboards, and attribution approaches before launch; use metrics such as reach, engagement quality, click-through, conversions, registrations, benefit use, and attributable revenue when relevant.
· Monitor results during campaigns—not merely afterward—and use analytics, audience feedback, tests, and conversion data to adapt messaging, creative assets, channel mix, frequency, and spending to improve performance.
· Provide regular, clear reports to the CEO and organizational leadership comparing outcomes with targets, explaining strategic adjustments, documenting lessons learned, and recommending resource allocation. Manage assigned budgets, vendors, and timelines.
· Establish and apply consistent criteria for evaluating KR communications products and channels on an ongoing basis, including audience relevance, engagement, direct costs, attributable revenue or profit margin where applicable, and potential for growth. Recommend which activities to expand, improve, consolidate, or discontinue based on evidence and strategic value.
· Create and maintain documented procedures, content approval processes, crisis communication workflows, and continuity plans for core communications activities.
*Cross-Functional & Event Support (5%)*
· Serve as communications lead for major KR events, including pre-event promotion, onsite content and coverage, signage and collateral coordination, and post-event follow-up, in collaboration with the event owner.
· Participate in staff projects, committee support, and other related duties as assigned while maintaining timely, helpful, and professional interactions with members and colleagues.
Qualifications
· Self-motivated, proactive, collaborative, creative, and highly organized professional with excellent judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to KR’s mission and strategic objectives.
· Five or more years of progressively responsible experience developing, leading, and measuring marketing strategies and campaigns; association, membership, or mission-driven organization experience preferred.
· Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience considered.
· Exceptional writing, editing, public communication, and visual storytelling skills, with demonstrated ability to create persuasive, audience-specific narratives that communicate an organization’s mission, value, and impact.
· Ability to turn business objectives into testable marketing hypotheses, select leading and lagging indicators, and communicate data-driven recommendations to nonmarketing colleagues.
· Required: A documented record of personally developing, deploying, and improving successful marketing strategies. Candidates must be prepared to present examples showing audience definition, campaign goals, their own responsibilities, baseline and target measures, execution, actual results, and data-informed adjustments.
· Hands-on proficiency in video production and post-production, including planning, scripting, camera operation, lighting, audio capture, editing, captions, formatting, exporting, and publishing content for web, email, events, and social media; experience with professional editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or comparable tools.
· Hands-on proficiency in graphic design and visual content production, including concept development, layout, typography, color theory, image selection and editing, branding, and preparing professional-quality materials for print and digital distribution; experience with professional design software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, or comparable tools.
· Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement AI-powered tools and technologies to improve the efficiency, creativity, personalization, and effectiveness of the Association's marketing and communications efforts while ensuring appropriate human oversight, data privacy, and adherence to organizational standards.
· Demonstrated experience managing website content and user experience using a content management system, including information architecture, accessible design, search engine optimization, web analytics, and conversion-focused page improvements.
· Strong command of digital marketing, social media account administration, and performance measurement, including account security and access management, audience segmentation, marketing automation, analytics dashboards, conversion tracking, A/B testing, and campaign optimization; proficiency with Microsoft 365 and relevant marketing, design, and video tools.
· Demonstrated ability to manage external creative professionals and marketing service providers, including developing briefs, coordinating schedules, reviewing deliverables, maintaining brand consistency, and assessing quality, costs, and outcomes.
